after your appointment (tattoo aftercare)
when it comes to Tattoo Aftercare Instructions To be honest every person is an individual, As is their Skin type .
And every Tattoo style affects the Skin differently. Also the Clients personal life and Job will affect the Healing process of the Tattoo. This is why most people's Tattoo Aftercare Routine will differ slightly. (Your Artist will go through an After care Routine with you that will specifically help the healing of your Tattoo Style, Personal life and Profession.)
But A Basic Tattoo aftercare Routine is. .
When you leave the Studio after your Session, Your Tattoo will be wrapped in Clingfilm. This is because The Tattooed area will be swollen and slightly weeping or bleeding from the process. it will also be a bit sore and your skin Pores will be open.
The Clingfilm will act as a barrier from your Clothes rubbing against it, and Bacteria getting into your new Tattoo. It will also stop your clothes from being soiled from any bleeding etc.
Once home ,after a couple of hours Remove the Clingfilm and give the area a gentle wash with warm water and unperfumed soap. The Area will probably still be weeping slightly (Especially with some Styles like Realism, black and grey etc). So once again wrap the tattoo up with clean Clingfilm for the first night.(This will help keep Bacteria from your bed sheets away for the area, As well as protecting them from the ink and Weeping that will probably occur over night.
in the morning, Wash and gently dry your new tattoo.
And (if it’s stopped weeping ) Apply a small amount of “Bepanthem Ointment” to the area. This will provide a protective barrier over the tattoo, protecting it from Bacteria and dirt etc while the Skin Rejuvenates itself.
it also allows the area to breathe.Repeat this step when ever you feel the skin is too dry and needs it. The amount of times will differ from person to person and weather conditions/Seasons etc.
if your Job Requires the new tattoo to come into contact with contaminant’s (Dirt ,Cement etc) It may be better to wrap the area with Clingfilm to protect it while performing these tasks,
but let the air get to it as much as possible.
It’s best to let the fresh air get to your Tattoo to let the skin breathe and not Get too hot and sweaty. Heat produces Bacteria. (if in doubt,Phone the studio and ask your Artist..)
In the first stage of healing (Usually the first week or so) Please Refrain from using Swimming pools, Saunas and long soaks in the Bath/HotTub (This will cause the protective Scab that has formed to protect your Epidermis to soak off prematurely, leaving your tattoo vulnerable to the elements and contaminates).
Please Refrain from contact sports that could damage the Tattoo.
Please Refrain from exposing the Area to Bright Sunshine or using Sunbeds .(This could damage the new Ink pigments as well as your Skin).
The best thing to do is treat your tattoo like a cut or burn.( keep the area clean and be careful with it while it Rejuvenates itself).
after a week or so, your tattoo will enter the second phase of healing,
This is when the initial Scab has fallen off and you can see your tattoo more clearly.
Instead of applying Bepanthem, (Your skin has formed its own protective barrier over the area now)
The Skin will benefit from a good (Unscented) Body Moisturiser such as E45 cream.
Even though the Tattoo will look healed after a couple of weeks or so (Depending on the person, Body Area and Tattoo Type).
Your Skin will actually take a while longer to fully heal The Epidermis, and to Strengthen enough to protect your Tattoo that now sits in the Dermis below.
This can take up to a couple of months,So take care of the area and be gentle with it.
Even though your tattoo will be with you for life,
Please be aware it will age as your skin ages and can be damaged by Exposure to the Sun, Just as your Skin can be. If you are in the Sun a lot ,A good quality Sun Cream or Block will help to protect your tattoo and keep it looking its best.
If you have any questions or are worried about your tattoo Aftercare Routine, Please phone the Studio or pop in and have a chat with your Artist. They will be more than happy to check your tattoo and answer any queries you have.
Remember, It may be your Tattoo but it’s our Art.
